What Is Never Solo?
Never Solo is on online resource to provide resources, education and support that seeks to prevent and treat abuse in the rock climbing community. We help organizations like climbing gyms provide education resources to their members and staff and to train parents of athletes and coaches on recognizing and preventing abuse.
We also provide resources and education materials for climbers who have suffered abuse and are looking for help to get a foothold to overcome trauma.
How Can Never Solo Help?
We create events at climbing gyms for members, staff, and coaches to learn how to prevent abuse from happening.
We can provide training for climbing gym staff and coaches, run member-focused events to help educate the larger community, provide resources for parents of athletes, and to educate youth and professional athletes to recognize and prevent abuse from happening to them and others within their community.
Is Abuse Happening in My Community?
The short answer is yes. Often times the climbing community, parents of athletes, and climbing gym staff don’t recognize the signs of abuse. Our mission is to ensure that organizations and parents understand what abuse is, how to prevent it from happening, how to support victims of sexual abuse, and what signs to look out for to protect climbers.
1. What counts as Sexual Abuse?
Sexual abuse refers to any form of inappropriate sexual behavior or contact that occurs without consent, including touching, harassment, or exploitation.
Sexual assault is a more specific term that refers to any non-consensual sexual act, such as rape or attempted rape, involving physical force, threats, or incapacitation.
2. What are the Warning Signs of Abuse?
Look out for individuals who try to isolate others, especially in private or secluded environments where supervision is minimal. Pay attention to excessive boundary-crossing behaviors, such as inappropriate comments, unnecessary physical contact, or persistent attempts to spend time alone with someone. Be mindful of power dynamics—those in positions of authority, such as coaches or mentors, who may exploit trust or exert undue influence.
3. What Is Coersion?
Coercion in the context of sexual abuse refers to the use of pressure, manipulation, threats, or deception to make someone engage in unwanted sexual activity.
Unlike physical force, coercion often involves more subtle tactics, such as emotional manipulation, intimidation, or exploiting vulnerabilities. The abuser may use guilt, promises of favors, or threats of harm (either physical or emotional) to overpower the victim’s ability to freely consent.
In some cases, coercion can involve leveraging authority, such as in relationships where one person holds more power, like between a coach and athlete. Regardless of the method, coercion undermines the victim’s autonomy and violates their right to make free, consensual choices regarding their body.

About Never Solo?
Never Solo was founded in Northern California after two high-profile cases of abuse emerged in our community. As climbers, we understand the need to educate climbers to help prevent abuse in the community.
We work primarily with organizations who train competitive athletes to recognize and prevent abuse from happening to youth and professional climbers who train with coaches as well as individual climbers looking to overcome the trauma of abuse, regardless of whether the abuse took place in the context of rock climbing.
We are here so the climbing community knows that, no matter who you are, you are never solo.
